Susanoo is one of the Three Noble Children in Japanese mythology. He is the youngest brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu. Despite being a reckless figure who committed various misdeeds, leading to his banishment from the High Heavenly Plain, Susanoo later redeemed himself as a hero by slaying the eight-headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi.
The Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures possessed by Amaterasu, is said to have emerged from the tail of the serpent after Susanoo defeated it. As the slayer of the water serpent deity, Susanoo also came to be revered as a god of agriculture, as his taming of the waters led to bountiful harvests.
This artwork powerfully depicts Susanoo holding the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword. While the material of the sword is a subject of various theories, the artist has chosen to depict it as a bronze sword.
