Tsukuyomi is one of the Three Noble Children in Japanese mythology, being the brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and Susanoo. As the deity of the moon, Tsukuyomi rules over the nighttime realm. Tsukuyomi is often depicted in a masculine form, though there are also interpretations of the deity as female.
The name "Tsukuyomi" refers to the ability to read the waxing and waning of the moon, and Tsukuyomi is regarded as a deity deeply connected to the calendar, as well as agriculture and divination. Additionally, due to the moon's gravitational influence on the tides, Tsukuyomi is also revered as a sea deity.
This artwork beautifully portrays Tsukuyomi in an elegant pose, with the moon behind the deity and holding a crystal - which is likely amethyst, also known as purple quartz.
