This is a beautiful depiction of the goddess Ame-no-Uzume, a famous figure in Japanese mythology for her role in the "Heavenly Rock Cave" episode.
When the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself in the Heavenly Rock Cave, angered by the mischievous acts of Susanoo, the world was plunged into darkness. It was Ame-no-Uzume who saved the world, performing a passionate and ecstatic dance in front of the cave entrance. Unafraid to bare her body, her dancing lured Amaterasu out of hiding, restoring light to the world.
Ame-no-Uzume is considered the earliest dancer in Japanese tradition, and is revered as the ancestral deity of the performing arts. In this artwork, she is depicted holding a fan and bamboo, gracefully dancing with a simple yet beautiful silhouette that highlights the elegance of her bare form. This captures the essence of Ame-no-Uzume's pivotal role as the progenitor of Japanese performing arts.
