The Black Maria is a well-known figure overseas, referring to depictions of the Virgin Mary with a dark-colored skin. There is a belief that she became black as a surrogate for the sick, making her an auspicious motif.
This design is inspired by Gothic architecture, featuring intricate openwork patterns like arabesque and stained glass. The Maria figure is meticulously crafted within these openwork details. A black sapphire has been set into the pendant, evoking the setting in the Vatican.
